Fasting & Abstinence
Ash Wednesday and Good Friday—Days of Fasting and Abstinence from Meat*
All Fridays in Lent—Abstinence from Meat*
Sacrificial Alms Giving
We are asked to focus more intently on “almsgiving,” which means donating money or goods to the
poor and performing other acts of charity. Almsgiving is “a witness to fraternal charity” and “a work
of justice pleasing to God.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 2462).
During this season of Lent, we remember our brothers and sisters at St. Joseph, LaLomas,
our sister parish in Haiti. Through your generosity, we are able to provide healthy lunches for
the school children during the school day. For many of the children, lunch at school is their only
substantial meal. We ask you to consider making a monetary donation so we can continue to provide
healthy lunches for the children. You can drop a check in the offertory basket marked “Haiti” or go
online to Faith Direct to donate. Donations to the poor box, the weekend of March 5/6 and April 2/3,
will go directly to Haiti.
* For members of the Latin Catholic Church, the norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal. The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members of the Latin Catholic Church from age 14 onwards.
