This week’s Gospel could be a scene from the Broadway musical, Godspell — you are the light of the world; you are the salt of the earth.  These are quite the compliment coming from Jesus to us.  He sees the potential, giftedness and talent in us and then urges us to light up the world, to spice up life.  Yet, especially at this time of the year, how often we get caught up in the doldrums. We have a hard time just doing what we need to do from day to day, much less being a light to others who are lost or down.

And if we think we are too little, too weak, too shy, St. Paul offers us these words in the Second Reading, “I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling, and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of Spirit and power.”  In other words it is GOD who can accomplish miracles in and with us if we just cooperate!  We may feel inadequate. We may not believe in ourselves and think others more capable. But listen to Jesus’ words to you this weekend — YOU are the light of the world.  YOU are the salt of the earth.  Now go out and be salt and light!
