The Second Sunday of Advent is already upon us and John the Baptist calls us to urgency! There is no excuse for us to say we have no time. He calls for repentance to prepare the way of the Lord. And then he says, “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.” That is always the sticking point, isn’t it. It’s difficult enough to repent but then we have to put our change, our repentance into action by the way we live. So, this week, instead of getting annoyed at people on the road or in the parking lots, take extra time and patience with them. Allow someone to move in front of you on foot or in their car! Surprise people with kindness and consideration at the time of year when this tends to run short. Remember, we do not want to be like the Scribes and Pharisees in the Gospel, whom Jesus calls a “brood of vipers!” We want to be people who recognize Christ in our midst, repent and produce good fruit.
